For the most part, the 2024 ESPYs had plenty of heartfelt moments and hilarious jokes. Unfortunately, there was a very awkward scene involving Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
It all started with New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason delivering a passionate acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
“If it weren’t for my family, community and caregivers, I would’ve been dead years ago,” Gleason said.
After Gleason said that he “would’ve been dead years ago,” the cameras for ABC shifted over to Hamlin. Fans thought it was a bizarre and insensitive moment considering the safety’s past.
In January of 2023, Hamlin nearly lost his life on the football field. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery.
Sports fans believe ABC’s camera crew should deal with some type of consequences for this uncomfortable moment. Will they though? Probably not.
“That is some nasty work,” one fan wrote on X.
Another fan said, “Someone’s gotta be fired for that.”

It’s very possible this was just one huge mixup from ABC. However, we can’t deny that it’s an awful look for the network.
Hamlin has not commented on this bizarre scene. Frankly, we’re not sure if he’s even aware of it. There’s a good chance he won’t care.
