The five finalists for NFL MVP in 2024 include Josh Allen.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is a finalist for the NFL’s MVP award, voted on by members of the Associated Press at the conclusion of the 2024 regular season. The same voting body named him second-team All-Pro at the quarterback position.
For a large portion of the season, Allen was the voting favorite for the MVP award, but Lamar Jackson has overtaken him since the All-Pro voting was announced.
Allen was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week four times this season, was the first player in NFL history to score three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns in one game, and became the first QB to ever score a rushing, receiving, and passing touchdown in the same game.
Unfortunately for Allen, it’s been almost 40 years since the second-team quarterback was named MVP ahead of the first-team quarterback. In 1987, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice split the MVP vote allowing John Elway to capture the most votes.
Who are the finalists for NFL MVP?
Here are the five finalists (in alphabetical order):
- Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen
- Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley
- Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow
- Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff
- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson
Allen was fifth in MVP voting following the 2023 season. In 2022, he was third behind Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. Under different voting rules in 2020, he came in second to Aaron Rodgers. (Voting changed from one vote for one player in 2021 to rank-choice voting in 2022.)
What does it mean to be an NFL MVP finalist?
Unlike some awards outside of football, where you narrow down the voting with initial ballots and then vote again when finalists are determined, all of these votes have already been cast. The finalists are just the people the NFL is going to invite to the NFL Honors Awards show. They are the top five vote-getters for the award.
When is voting on the Offensive Player of the Year?
Voting for the NFL awards takes place at the end of the regular season, so playoffs and Super Bowl performance are not taken into account.
What is the voting process for Offensive Player of the Year?
For the last few years, voters have been asked to rank their top picks for each award one through five. A first-place vote is worth 10 points, second place is five points, third place is three points, fourth place is two points, and fifth place is one point. The numbers are totaled at the end with first-place votes being a tiebreaker.
When will we find out who won Offensive Player of the Year?
We find out the winners of the NFL awards at the NFL Honors presentation on February 6th, the Thursday before the Super Bowl. The ceremony will air on Fox and NFL Network at 9 p.m. Eastern.
Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley are hoping not to be in attendance due to preparations for the Super Bowl.
