After a slow start the Orange adjusted, but for one key play
The Syracuse Orange put up 31 points against the Boston College Eagles and that should have been enough to secure an ACC road win.
Unfortunately the Syracuse defense couldn’t stop the run and the 31 points weren’t enough. Does that put all the blame on the Orange defense? Nope, not when the offense had two costly turnovers and early struggles which gave BC a chance to jump in front.
Syracuse tried to establish the run early in this game to poor results. A long McCord scramble bolstered the numbers but the offense started moving when Oronde Gadsden was targeted on early downs.
The second half finally got some touches for Trebor Pena, but the sack/fumble/safety play highlighted a critical collapse after the Orange had battled back to take the lead. Giving up a tying touchdown drive of 75 yards in three plays, followed by allowing a sack and safety on the next offensive snap sent Syracuse chasing the score again.
The offense executed well after being down two scores, but it was too little, too late. This continues a trend we’ve seen of slow starts and strong halftime adjustments. It would be nice if this week the Orange can script some successful offensive plays to start the game against Cal.
We know the defense isn’t going to hold up against the run, to getting a better start from the offense could help matters.
