Orange stepped up in the 2nd half
The Syracuse Orange struggled to get going in the first half against the Virginia Tech Hokies. It wasn’t that the offense couldn’t move the ball, but once again it was a lot of self-inflicted damage hurting the Orange.
The numbers on first down were fine thanks to a couple of solid runs and one pass completion to Darrell Gill, Jr, which became a turnover. Syracuse committed two turnovers on first downs inside Virginia Tech territory and it helped the Hokies jump out to a solid lead.
In the second half the Orange started slow but the big play from Justus Ross-SImmons sparked them. After that Syracuse dialed up a well-executed screen to Trebor Pena and found a rhythm to get the Hokies defense off-balance.
The game-tying drive in regulation featured a lot of LeQuint Allen in the middle of a spread out defense and it showed that being able to take defenders out of the box is crucial to this team’s run game.
Last week I asked when the Orange would get some explosive plays and let’s hope they can keep that going at Boston College.
