He gained a year of eligibility but looks like it will be spent elsewhere
The Syracuse Orange will likely have a different starting center next season, as senior J’Onre Reed has entered the transfer portal:
It Has Been A Blessing And Grateful Opportunity To Play At Syracuse University. Thank You To All My Coaches And Teammate The Memories Are Priceless.
I Have Entered My Name In Portal.— (@GoGettaReed) December 31, 2024
Reed would have exhausted his eligibility in 2024 if not for a recent blanket wavier passed by the NCAA awarding former JuCo players an additional year, regardless of if they played one or two years at that level.
Reed spent two years with Hutchinson CC before transferring to SU, where he started 25 games at center over the past two seasons. He was the team’s highest-graded pass blocker according to PFF in 2023 and second-best run blocker in 2024.
Meanwhile, Jakob Bradford and Mark Petry also spent time at JuCo and would be eligible to return for another season if either wishes to. Both played all 13 games this past season – Bradford at left guard and Petry at right guard – and were the top two pass blockers on the o-line.
Regardless of their choices, the Orange should at least return starting left tackle Da’Metrius Weatherspoon, as well as David Wohlabaugh Jr., Joe Cruz, Codie Hornsby, and Joshua Miller.
Savion Washington, the other starting tackle from this year, appears to have exhausted his eligibility. While officially listed as a redshirt junior on SU’s depth charts the past season, PFF snap counts say he appeared in nine games for Kent State in 2021, mainly with the field goal unit.
