Bringing joy to your tastebuds this holiday season
There’s no denying that the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season is off to a rocky start. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with this year’s squad.
Introducing (technically reviving) the 2024-25 ‘Cuse MBB Taco Time Tracker. It’s been over three years since our last update, so I’m excited to welcome you back into the taco industry.
Taco Time has been around at the Dome for nearly 30 years, and while the requirements have changed over time, it’s still an iconic Orange promotion and tradition.
This season, whenever Syracuse scores 70 points at home, fans walk away with a free Crunchy Beef Taco courtesy of Taco Bell. Let’s refer to this as ATTS, or “Against the Taco Spread.”
In addition, I’ll keep track of the “Bell-ringers,” aka the player who scores the 70th point, thus granting fans with free food.
Here’s where we stand after six games:
To the delight of all 315 taco lovers, the Orange are perfect so far at reaching this 70-point target. Jyare Davis and J.J. Starling currently share the Bell-ringer crown with two taco-winners apiece. Davis got SU on the board with a taco-sealing layup in its home opener against Le Moyne and added another clinching basket in the Cornell game. The latter got the Orange over the hump with a layup against Colgate and free throws days later versus Youngstown State.
It’ll be interesting to see who steps up and steals the crown away in Starling’s absence. Donnie Freeman drilled a taco-tastic three-pointer in Syracuse’s blowout win against UAlbany, while Hofstra transfer Jaquan Carlos barely kept the undefeated streak alive with free throws versus Georgetown.
With 11 home games remaining, there’s still tons of time left for free tacos, beginning on Dec. 28 against Bucknell. While the results on the court have been suspect, I am hopeful this Taco Tracker can bring you some amusement heading into the new year.
Who do you think will take home the 2024-25 Bell-ringer crown? Let us know in the comments.
