A career high from Sophie Burrows leads Orange over Virginia Tech
The Syracuse Orange (9-13, 3-8) women’s basketball team went on the road and used some hot shooting to knock off the Virginia Tech Hokies (15-8, 6-6) by a score of 93-87 at Cassell Coliseum.
Sophie Burrows poured in a career-high 28 points on 9-15 shooting to lead Syracuse. Burrows’ 8 3-pointers were one off the school-record, but it was a Cassell Coliseum opponent record. She was part of an Orange squad that torched the nets with a 12-21 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
Syracuse wasn’t just hitting from deep last night as they ended the game shooting 38-63 (60.3%) from the field against the Hokies. All five Syracuse starters finished in double-digits and Dominique Camp had 10 of the Orange’s 24 assists.
After a close first quarter, Syracuse out-scored Virginia Tech 26-18 in the second to open up a 12-point lead at the half. It looked like it was going to be another second-half struggle as the Hokies put together a 12-3 run in the third quarter to close the gap. Syracuse’s lead was down to three when Izabel Varejao hit a jumper and Georgia Woolley blocked a Hokies 3.
In the fourth, Syracuse kept making clutch plays whenever Virginia Tech got close. First it was Kyra Wood grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring to break a 77-77 tie. Burrows followed with a 3 and the lead was back to five. Twice down the stretch, the Hokies closed to within four points but first Camp and then Angelica Velez knocked down shots to help the Orange grab a solid road win.
