Western Michigan bows out of incredible season with a valiant effort.
Welcome back to MACtion on the Pitch, your weekly recap of Mid-American Conference women’s soccer.
Western dominated the MAC title game, earning a spot in the NCAA tournament. They looked to win a tournament game for the first time since 2013, taking a short trip to East Lansing to take on Michigan State.
Western Michigan at Michigan State (3-1 Michigan State)
15:47 into the match, Michigan State’s Emily Mathews scored the opening goal (Meg Hughes assist. 1:47 later, Justina Gaynor doubled the lead for the Spartans (Sofia Beerworth assist). In the 32nd minute, Jen Blitchok scored her 18th goal of the season to give the Broncos life. Michigan State would lead 2-1 at the half. The Broncos would fight to put the ball in the goal, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer. With 7:15 to go, Bella Najera put the game away for Michigan State (Mackenzie Anthony assist). Western Michigan concluded their historic season with a defeat, but all the accomplishments will be celebrated for years to come.

Jen Blitchok earns our goal of the match. She scored late in the first half to give the Broncos a fighting chance.
