From 6 to 4, cashing tickets on the way
Our window to bet on basketball is waning with every minute that passes. After two games today we’re down to three games remaining this tournament. So we have to get while the getting is good. Today’s Elite 8 matchups will give us our final Final Four squads and will settle the argument of SEC dominance. We have limited games left and limited chances to cash winners after a fairly phenomenal performance so far this weekend.
Your breakdown of the Saturday slate for the Elite 8:
Game 1: Tennessee Volunteers vs Houston Cougars
Tip Time: 2:20PM
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN
Television: CBS
Storylines:
- The Cougars boast one of the best defenses in college basketball, allowing just 58.5 points per game. Their ability to shut down opponents has been a cornerstone of their success.
- The Volunteers have a slightly higher scoring average at 74.7 points per game. Their balanced offense, led by standout players like Zakai Zeigler and Jordan Gainey, will be crucial in breaking through Houston’s defensive wall.
- Houston has an edge in rebounding, averaging 10.9 per game compared to Tennessee’s 9.8. Winning the boards could be a decisive factor and against Kentucky, Tennessee dominated the boards and then the game.
- Both teams are fairly evenly matched in three-point shooting, with Houston averaging 8.1 and Tennessee 8.3 per game. A hot shooting night from beyond the arc could swing the game for either squad.
- Houston’s roster is filled with experienced players who have been through high-pressure games. Tennessee, on the other hand, has shown resilience and momentum throughout the tournament despite relative newness.
Belt Bets:
Line: Tennessee +2.5
O/U: Over 124.5
Prop of the Game: Zakai Zeigler (TENN) over 12.5 points
Game 2: Michigan State Spartans vs Auburn Tigers
Tip Time: 5:05PM
Location: State Farm Arena, Atlanta, GA
Television: CBS
Storylines
- Top-seeded Auburn averages an impressive 83.6 points per game, ranking 10th nationally. Their ability to score in bunches, led by senior forward Johni Broome (18.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game), will be a major factor.
- Conversely, the Spartans are known for their defensive prowess, allowing just 67.1 points per game. Their ability to slow down Auburn’s high-powered offense will be critical to be competitive.
- Both teams are evenly matched in rebounding, with each averaging 10.4 rebounds per game. Winning the boards could be a decisive factor and the victor will have to win the rebounding battle.
- Auburn has a significant edge in three-point shooting, averaging 9.1 made threes per game compared to Michigan State’s 6.0. A hot shooting night from beyond the arc could tilt the game in Auburn’s favor.
- For Auburn, Johni Broome and guard Denver Jones are pivotal. For Michigan State, senior guard Jaden Akins and freshman guard Jase Richardson will play crucial roles. Whichever team has a breakout star may very well tip the scales.
Belt Bets:
Line: Auburn -5.5
O/U: Over 145.5
Prop of the Game: Johni Broome over 10.5 rebounds
