One month into the job, Eddie George gets a possible starting QB for 2025.
Bowling Green must replace a quarterback for the 2025 season after the departure of two-year starter Connor Bazelak.
With new head coach Eddie George running show, the Falcons landed a potential starter at the position Monday morning. Drew Pyne transferred to Bowling Green and will arrive with two years of eligibility remaining. The news of the transfer was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Pyne is a well-traveled quarterback with previous stops of Notre Dame (2020-22), Arizona State (2023), and Missouri (2024). The soon-to-be sixth-year senior enters Bowling Green with 12 starts under his belt and a 9-3 record as a starter.
He spent the 2022 season as the Fighting Irish’s primary starter, throwing for 2,021 yards on a 64.6 completion rate with 22 touchdowns and six touchdowns. He only started one game apiece at Arizona State in a 2023 campaign marred by lower body injuries. Pyne then relocated to Missouri as the backup to Brady Cook, but he still made six appearances while starting and delivering three touchdown strikes in a thrilling 30-23 victory over Oklahoma.
The veteran quarterback enters his sixth year of college football with 2,921 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions under his belt — highlighted by one 300-yard outing and five games with three or more touchdown passes. He also adds 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with a single-game high of 30.
Pyne, like Bowling Green’s 2023 and 2024 starter Bazelak, started games for multiple universities (including Missouri) before becoming a Falcon. And similarly, Pyne will have two years of eligibility in his new MAC home.
Quarterbacks on the Falcons’ roster include Lucian Anderson III, who was frequently inserted in packages last year as the Bowling Green’s most mobile quarterback in 2024. Anderson has 12 passes and 27 rushing attempts in two years with the Falcons, contributing four collective touchdowns. Another backup, Baron May, threw a 43-yard touchdown in the 68 Ventures Bowl on a fake punt. The only other quarterbacks on the Bowling Green roster are redshirt freshman Jonny Sorensen and true freshman JT Kitna, who have yet to accrue collegiate experience.
Bowling Green previously acquired Stanford transfer Justin Lamson in January, but Lamson transferred in the aftermath of former head coach Scot Loeffler’s decision to step down and become the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach.
With Eddie George at the helm, a new-look quarterback competition is on in Bowling Green and the starter will make his first start in orange and brown on Thursday, Aug. 28 vs. FCS opponent Lafayette.
